Route 1, Frost Gully

The MaineDOT had an old stone culvert beneath Route 1, approximately one mile north of L.L. Bean in Freeport. They wanted to slipline the culvert, repair the road above it, and repair the side slopes.

Due to the odd shape of the host culvert and the hydraulic requirements, a unique culvert lining shape was required for the rehabilitation to be a success. The DOT suggested a Tunnel Liner Plate (TLP) by Contech, but for that to work we needed two different TLP sizes due to the variances in the shape of the host tunnel.

In addition, lightweight cellular concrete was used to fill the annular space, and baffles were installed in the invert to meet environmental regulations.
